A Swarm of Word Work

This week the children have been reading The Bee by Sabrina Crewe. This is a nonfiction test on our reading series. (This is lesson 23 in Harcourt Storytown .)

I added four new word work activites this week with a bee theme. I have also uploaded this word work activity packet to TPT. You can find the activities HERE. The cost is $3.

Here is what it includes:

The first in a vowel variant word sort. This activity has four beehives labeled with one of these spellings: oo, ew, ue, ou. Students will match the bees to the hives. Students then record responses on a provided recording sheet.

The 2nd activity is Buzzin’ with Parts of Speech, students match words to the correct parts of speech. There are 24 words that will be sorted into the following categories: noun, verb, adjective. This also includes a recording sheet and key.

The 3rd activity is Synonym Bee Match. Students will match each word on the bee with the flower that has the correct synonym. There will be 15 synonym matches. This also includes a recording sheet and key.

The last activity is Bee Fact and Opinion. It has 12 statements that students must determine if they are fact or opinion. This comes with a recording sheet and key.

To play Vocabulary Dominoes students will match vocabulary words with the correct definitions. There is no recording sheet.

This is our version of "Boggle". Students are able to use any off the letters to form words. I encourage students to use what they have alreadly learned to aid them in making their words.

  2. A swarm of word work is definitely better than a swarm of bees...although I have a couple of kids that might disagree! lol

  4. Thanks for the great ideas! I just found your blog!

There are so many of you that have "hooked" me into the blogging world & have inspired me to want to start my own! If you have any great advice for a newbie- I am willing to learn! I just started my own blog and waiting for my blog makeover which should be ready in a few days! I would love to learn how to create printables etc, but my "nitch" is technology. If you are interested in integrating technology into the classroom, maybe you could stop by:
