31 More Days...End Of Year Question

WOW!  This year has flown by.  The students only have 31 more school days.  Our last day for students is May 24.  The last day for teachers is May 25.  How many more days do you have?

Last year I taught kindergarten and we did an ABC countdown.  You can read more about that here.

My question:

Do you do any type of countdown to summer?  If so, what?  I am looking for ideas for my second graders (soon to be third graders).  Please email me or leave me a comment with your ideas or links to any products or posts that will be helpful.  If there is enough interest I can combine all information into a singular post of maybe a linky party.  Just let me know what works best for you!

Thanks for any help you can give me!

  1. I have 34 days to go!! Woot Woot! I do a simple countdown with my 2nd graders. I wish I did something a little more "exciting" sometimes but a few other teachers in my school have done similar things so I piggy backed! When we get down to amount of days we have left with the number of students we have....(if you have 19 students, you start when there's 19 days left). On a cute poster or something, you tape 19 fun lollipops or something neat! At the end of each day you pick a child's name from a hat (or something) and they get to take a lollipop down, put up their name and count how many are left. I always prepare them for someone's going to be last and I really try to make that last few feel special with fun remarks. (you were picked last b/c you are so patient and knew other kids needed to be first) :) it usually helps ease some pain. :) It's not much but the kids do get excited for the countdown!
    Enjoy your last 31 days!!!!

  2. I never countdown. We track in and out at my school. I go 9 weeks in and 3 weeks out. My kids are never really quite sure when we are ending a track in. Keeping it mysterious helps me keep their behavior on an even keel!! Last quarter I totally surprised most of them by telling them that they were not to come to school on the following Monday! I can see that it would be trickier to do this in a traditional school though. Sorry no great ideas for this! :)
